Part III – Key Takeaways and Additional Resources

We’ve covered a lot about GSM – what it is and why it’s important. Let’s recap the key takeaways of GSM and actions you can implement immediately:

1. Understand the Importance: Recognize that pelvic conditions are common during menopause transition but not normal. Education and awareness are the first steps toward effective management.

2. Seek Specialized Care: Pelvic physical therapy offers personalized care that addresses the specific needs of your pelvic floor, improving quality of life.

3. Advocate for Your Health: Always discuss your symptoms openly with healthcare providers and seek referrals to specialists in pelvic health. It is very important to note that if you are not happy with a provider’s answers (whether it is for you or someone you are supporting) you can ask about other treatment methods. Bring information along with you to support your questions. If you are still unhappy with what your provider is offering you can definitely go to another provider or seek out additional healthcare providers. Realize that sometimes it does take a team of providers to come up with a solution.

4. Self-Care and Management: Engage in prescribed pelvic exercises and make lifestyle adjustments as recommended by your therapist to maintain pelvic health.

5. Spread the Word: By talking about GSM and pelvic health, you help destigmatize these conditions and encourage more women to seek help.

To change perceptions regarding Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause and overall pelvic conditions, we need to start having conversations. The more everyone talks about conditions during menopause, the more we normalize the conversation. As more women realize that pelvic physical therapy can help with these disruptive conditions, they will be empowered to get proper care.
